Frequently asked questions

    Q: What is the difference between a 3D, 4D & 5D / HD Scan?
3D ultrasound can be obtained at any time during pregnancy, however the optimal time to have a 3D Ultrasound is between 26 and 32 weeks. Earlier pregnancy ultrasounds allow mothers to see more complete images of their baby. Later 3D baby ultrasounds reveal improved facial features since the developing fat layer enhances these images. It is important to remember that all images are dependent on the baby's position, movement, size, and the amount of surrounding amniotic fluid.
4D Ultrasound (or 4D Live Motion Imaging) is the continuous three-dimensional scanning of the baby with a simultaneous visualization of the A, B, and C planes. This revolutionary quad-beam technology, which obtains 3D images in Real-Time up to 25 volumes per second, goes beyond the boundaries of traditional ultrasound and opens the 4th dimension of Real Time so that you can see your baby moving in 3D. 5D / HD is light added on the image.

Q: What is an elective prenatal ultrasound?
We offer elective 2D, 3D, 4D & 5D / HD prenatal ultrasounds to provide a positive bonding experience for the mother, father and family members with the unborn baby. We feel that realistic 3D, 4D & 5D / HD images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family.

Q: Does this take the place of an ultrasound at my doctor's office?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Women seeking an elective prenatal ultrasound with Life Scan Studio MUST be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a medical, diagnostic ultrasound ordered by their provider to confirm their due date, screen for foetal anomalies, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues.

Q: Is it safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?
Extensive studies over 30 years have found that ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies are normal. In 3D/4D & 5D / HD scanning, exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning. 3D, 4D & 5D / HD Ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. The software used to interpret the sound waves during a 3D, 4D & 5D / HD ultrasound is much more sophisticated than in 2D.

Q: Do I need an appointment?
Yes, appointments are necessary for all of our services.

    Q: How long does the 3D, 4D & 5D / HD ultrasound take?
The ultrasound session could last between 5-10 minutes for gender determination, or 30 minutes for the entire scan.

Q: I already have a 3D picture from my Doctor. Why should I visit your clinic?
Typically, pictures received during your routine ultrasound are not as good as those received in our studio. The entire experience is incredible and sharing it with immediate family and friends brings everyone so much closer to the baby. Children and Dads especially enjoy meeting the new addition to the family.

    Q: How far along should I be before I have a 3D, 4D & 5D / HD ultrasound?
If you plan on having only one ultrasound session, we would recommend having the session performed between the 25th and 30th week of the pregnancy when the baby is more developed, and will look very similar to how he/she looks when born. However, excellent images of your baby can be obtained any time after 22 weeks and of pregnancy. We have obtained clear 3D, 4D & 5D / HD images even past the 35 week mark in some cases. Many mothers obtain more than one 3D, 4D & 5D / HD ultrasound and have images to enjoy from their second and third trimesters.

Q: Will I always get a beautiful image of my baby?
Usually, but not always. Sometimes if the baby is persistently looking face down, i.e. towards your spine it may be difficult to see the baby's face. If this happens, a repeat scan will usually succeed because the baby has turned to a favourable position. We make no promises that the images will be similar to those you might have seen elsewhere, or that we can always meet everyone's expectations. Every baby scans differently, depending on its gestational age, position, amount of fluid, and mother's size. We promise to make every effort to obtain the best possible images of whatever parts of the baby that can be seen.

Q: Can I bring my family and friends?
Yes. In fact, we encourage our clients to invite family and friends to attend the elective 3D, 4D & 5D / HD ultrasound session. We can comfortably accommodate up to 4 people, and maybe more. This is a joyous and wonderful experience, one that can be shared with your family and loved ones.

Q: Are you able to tell the sex of the baby?
Yes, in most cases we can determine the sex of the baby any time after 18 weeks. If your baby is being shy, we will invite you back for a free repeat session to try again.

    Q: Is the 3D, 4D & 5D / HD ultrasound covered by Medical Aid?
Since this is an elective procedure and is not intended to be a replacement for your doctor ordered ultrasound, you will need to pay the cost of this ultrasound as an out of pocket expense upfront. We accept Cash or Electronic Transfers.
